Complete renovation of a 51m² apartment
Completion: December 2023

This apartment—Sophie’s home—has undergone a full renovation. The exterior walls were insulated from the inside using a natural blend of linen, hemp, and cotton fibers. While the overall layout remains unchanged, the flow between spaces has been greatly improved, with some access points reconfigured—such as the kitchen, now accessible from the living room.

Material choices were guided by a desire for coherence and a fondness for the building’s original 1970s architecture. This is reflected in the color palette and striped tiles in the bathroom and kitchen, echoing the era's aesthetic. The same spirit informed the lighting and furniture selections, like the USM storage unit and the custom-designed dresser.

In the living room, the concrete load-bearing wall has been intentionally left exposed, showcasing the existing structure as a minimalist design choice that also conserves materials and resources. The off-white wool curtains in the bedroom and living area are made from French wool, woven in the eastern Pyrenees. The colored curtains, also French wool, were dyed by Sophie herself using natural dyeing techniques.

All the cabinetry—in three-layer bleached spruce—was designed without back panels to reduce material use, notably in the kitchen and dressing area. The library includes pieces of beech and cedar, hand-turned by Sophie, adding a personal and artisanal touch to the space.
